Monuments: Part I

Ummmm, so I think you get the point. I went for a walk to the monuments and it decided to pour rain. But, let's start back at the start of the day.

So, I cleaned up my old hotel room and moved to the Capitol Hilton and the company credit card :) (Thanks Sandy!) I had a suite at the last place, so it was huge, whereas this place is just a room. But this hotel is the definition of class. I came 3 hours prior to check-in and there was no problem at all getting me a room early. So, that was pretty sweet.

I settled in and unpacked my clothes, since I'm here for 7 days. Then I grabbed my tourist map and decided to walk to the monuments.

So, I start wandering. First building I came across was the AFL-CIO. For those of you who don't know that, it's the American Federation of Labour. Big business stuff.

Then I got to the White House. I was told it would be underwhelming, but it wasn't. I was quite impressed. I think it's a very nice building. Saw these people living in a tent across the street, pictures below. *cough*Hippies*cough*

There was a LOT of security around, but I didn't find it intimidating.

Then I found a nice little cafe and had lunch.

Kept walking and went by "The Ellipse." A big stretch of grass that you couldn't walk on...I'm not really sure what the significance of it is.

Then I came up to the Washington Monument. It was very cool. Very HUGE. Some nice guy asked me to take a picture of him and then he did the same for me.

Then off to the World War II Memorial. This was BEAUTIFUL. I really, really liked it.

Then it POURED RAIN. So, I didn't get to see the other monuments, but decided that I would come back another day. It finally let up a bit and I headed back to my hotel. It was really, really humid and hard to breathe. I grabbed supper on the way back and have it chilling in a sink full of ice here :P As I was coming back, this giant motorcade of cars came driving away from the White House. Was very cool.

Anyway, got back to the hotel early, but that's ok. I'm tired and it'll be good to relax for the evening and then sleep, as the conference good-ness starts early tomorrow morning.

Anyhoo, here are pictures! In no particular order, as it's hard to order the pictures on the blog.

This picture is what they had written in front of a wall of stars at the WWII memorial.

This was a quote on the wall of the WWII memorial. I just thought it was interesting.

The outside of the memorial was one of these for each state. Here's the one for Washington state.

Oh yeah! Saw this on my way home! Had to take a pic of it for Jeremy and Andrew...and Brooke if she's reading this.

Here's a picture of the motorcade. Looked cooler in real life.

Me! At the Washington Monument.

Here's the WWII Memorial.

The fountain at the WWII Memorial.

One end of the WWII Memorial. The other end said "Atlantic."

This is the wall of stars I was talking about.

Cool office building right beside the White House.

The name of the cool office building b/c I knew I would forget :P

That giant grassy area I was talking about?? I don't know what it's for or why we can't walk on it...but I do know that the poor bastards who work there didn't even get riding lawn mowers to move it with.

Walking up to the Washington Monument.

The base of the monument was surrounded by American Flags. I was thinking as I looked at it that it must be big business - US flag making.

Ummm...this is the...ummm...Andrew Jackson Statue! Had to look that one up.

Walking up to the White House.

The hippies who live across the street from the White House.

Picture from the front of the hippies.

The White House. Like I said, beautiful. I was pretty awed actually.

OK! That's all for today! I'm sure I'll make a couple other random posts. But for now, here ya go!

More Freaky Stuff about this Freaky Country!

They don't post their elevator paperwork in the elevator. They just post a sign with directions to the location of the paperwork.

At first, I thought it was just the shittiness of my first hotel - but it's the same thing in the swanky hotel.

FREAKY! I wonder how many guests go track down the "engineering room" to see it. I almost want to...

ZOO!!!

So, today I went and did the thing I was looking forward to the most...WENT TO THE ZOO!!! Wheeeeeee.

I stayed for about 5 hours and my feet are now KILLING me. That place is HUGE!!! Lots and lots of walking. It rained off and on, just a bit...not enough to drive people inside at all.

Anyway, I kind of, ummm...managed to take 161 pictures. Hehe. So, here's some of them...I'll try not to go TOO crazy.

Panda!!! I believe this is Mei Shang, the mommy panda :D The pandas were AWESOME!! Somehow I was surprised at how big they were, but they really were quite big! And CUTE! Soooooo cute :)

Fox! They're so cute when they haven't been flattened on the highway by a vehicle.

Gorilla! Sorry Chris...didn't see the one with the "large breasts." I tried to take a picture of the big guy in the back. It was soooo funny. He was sitting there all serious and the little one comes up and throws a handfull of straw in his face!! Hehehehe. Anyway, this one seemed like kind of the "young adult" of the group and came and was just leaning against the glass.

Elephants! The one on the right is the "baby" but he was actually born in, ummm...2001 I believe. Anyway, he's really big, but still smaller than the rest.

Panda again!!! Hehehehe. I think the most surprising thing about the pandas was the size of their enclosure. It's actually quite small.

Another panda! This is Tai Shan, the baby. He's soooo big now!! I got to watch him playing with his toy. :)

Simba!! I also tried to get a Timon picture, but the meerkat was hiding!!

Ummm, I believe this is a Gecko or whatever. Anyway, it's was such bright colours! Very pretty.

This turtle was HUGE. There were 3 of them. There's no way I could put my arms around it it was so huge.

This is a newt! The picture isn't 100% clear, but he was so tiny and cute!! I had to take a pic of him :)

Monkey!! B/c I know the boys love to see monkeys.

Ummm...PANDA!! They were so cute!!!

Oh! Here's Tai Shan playing with his toy!!

This is a listing of all the species of birds that have gone extinct. Quite a list.

Hehe, there were lots of funny signs all over the zoo. This one - there was one that warned me about 2-inch long wasps, one about animals that bite....

Bamboo!! The zoo grows all the bamboo for the pandas, so it's all over the place. Other people can grow bamboo for the zoo, but I believe the policy is that the zoo has to harvest it and it has to be all certified and stuff.

Ummm, ok. I managed to not barrage you with all my pics :P When I get a chance, I'll put up all my pics in a photo album somewhere that everyone can go see if they so choose.

The zoo was super fun. Lots of walking. Some general comments:

  • Pandas!!! Man, I spent so many hours of my life watching Tai Shan on webcam...it was so nice to see him face to face. He was so cute :)
  • I was a bit underwhelmed by all the water animals. They claimed to have a sea lion but there was no sea lion. The facilities for the water animals weren't that great...I keep remembering the aquarium in Vancouver last year, and this place just didn't even come close to measuring up to the Aquarium.
  • I never saw the lemurs :( Couldn't find any.
  • Kimodo dragons are HUGE!
  • My favourite place was the small mammal house - 2nd to the Pandas of course :)
  • I have discovered that shrews are incredibly cute. So, in the future, if I am ever called a shrew, I shall take it as a compliment...not that I want people to start calling me a shrew.
  • I got to see a two-toed sloth. The person there said that you basically never got to see the whole sloth, usually just part of them as they hid up top. This sloth crawled all the way down the tree and took a drink and climbed back up. Very cute.
Anyway, it was a good day and now I'm exhausted!

But, I'm going swimming! Yay! I'll post more later!
